Integrative Relational Counsellor: Marc Newton

Marc Newton June 2023

Need to talk?

People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons. I offer a safe and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions and the challenges you are going through.

Marc Newton June 2023

Using an integrative approach, I provide relational counselling tailored to your needs. I believe that connection is an important part of what makes counselling work; together, we can build a therapeutic relationship where you can feel safe, supported and understood.

Working collaboratively, I will help you to find acceptance, to grow and to develop more self-compassion. I will help you to work through past and present difficulties, gaining new awareness and perspective.

I have experience working with anxiety, anger, self-esteem, relationships, abuse, trauma, guilt and shame. Specialising in work with LGBTQ+ clients, I have experience in a wide range of issues around gender and sexual relationship diversity, including:

  • coming out;
  • internalised homophobia;
  • being a gay parent;
  • experience of discrimination and microaggressions;
  • gender identity and expression;
  • intersections of spirituality and sexuality;
  • and being ‘othered’.

Whilst these issues may or may not be the focus of our work together, I aim to provide a space where clients can consider how these aspects of identity affect their lives, their self-concept and their expectations of the world around them.

Finding the right counsellor can be daunting – but if you’re finding life hard and struggling with your feelings, then talking to me could help.

Qualifications

Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy, University of the West of England
Level 4 Counselling Certificate, University of the West of England

Professional registration

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and abide by their ethical framework for good practice.

Sessions

I offer sessions online and face-to-face. Sessions cost £50 and last for 50-55 minutes.

I offer face-to-face sessions on Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons. I offer online sessions on Mondays. Please get in touch for availability.

Initial meetings

Taking the first step into counselling can feel difficult; understandably, people sometimes feel nervous about the first session. You’re meeting a new person, in a new context, with the prospect of sharing personal, vulnerable things which you may not have told anyone before. Nerves are perfectly normal and we can work with that feeling. I am experienced in putting people at ease.

I offer clients a free initial meeting. This gives us an opportunity to decide whether we could work together. By coming to your initial meeting, you’re not signing up for anything and you’re not tied in to a certain number of sessions.

In the initial meeting, I won’t ask you to go too deep or share anything too vulnerable. It will be a chance for me to gather some information from you, after which we can explore what’s brought you to counselling. We will discuss what you would like to get from counselling, and start to think about how we might move forward. If you choose to have counselling with me, I will continue to review our work together as we go, so it doesn’t all have to be decided in our first session.

Get in touch to arrange a free initial meeting.

Psychotherapist – Accredited CBT and Accredited EMDR Therapist (working towards Consultancy): David Carvalho

Saturday appointments available

I offer my service as a BABCP Accredited CBT Therapist and BACP Accredited Psychotherapist and Counsellor.  I also practice as an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) practitioner and Couple Counsellor.

David Carvalho

In addition to my private practice, I work for the NHS, treating people with psychological difficulties such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety and specific phobias.

I am an accredited member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies).

I am also a member of the EMDR Association UK & Ireland and an associate member of the British Emotionally Focused Therapy Community (BEFT).

Below is a summary of the approaches which underpin my practice, you may find these present in our therapy sessions together.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

My CBT practice is based on psychological therapies that have proven to be effective in treating anxiety and depressive disorders.  This means that during therapy we will explore how your thinking patterns, affect how you feel emotionally and behave, whilst working towards alternative ways to enable you to enhance your mood.  The overall aim is to facilitate you in becoming your own therapist.  This is achieved in a warm and empathic manner where I provide a safe non-judgmental atmosphere.  I believe in the importance of the therapeutic relationship, taking the time to find the most helpful and effective way of working with you.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

I have clinical experience of using EMDR with complex problems.  EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of traumatic life experiences.  EMDR works directly on the brain where traumatic experiences are frozen and often inaccessible to the conscious mind. The ultimate aim of the treatment is to work through the suppressed distressful emotions linked with the traumatic experience and to dismantle and reconstruct the negative self-beliefs developed as a result of the traumatic experience.  In the case of a single trauma sustained in adulthood, there will be 1 or 2 assessment sessions, followed by 1 or 2 sessions discussing and preparing for EMDR treatment, followed by at least 2 or 3 treatment sessions.  The number of actual treatment sessions depends on the nature and number of distressing memories or complexity of the problem.

Couples Counselling

My work with couples focus on communication difficulties and intimacy issues within the relationship.  I provide a safe space where you can focus on your relationship and work together to find a way forward for yourselves.  With professional support, you can learn to communicate more clearly with each other, explore patterns in your relationship, shift blockages and try out new ways of being together.

My approach to couple counselling is focused on adult attachment and emotionally focused couple’s therapy (EFT).  EFT is a change process that facilitates movement from distress to recovery by transforming negative cycles of interaction into safe emotional connection between intimate partners.  Based on the science of emotions and attachment theory as well as humanistic and systemic theories, EFT has a high success rate in achieving secure, resilient relationships in couples and in helping people to flexibly manage their emotional experience

Therapeutic Counsellor: Paul Deaton

Paul Deaton

About me and my therapy practice

I have returned to face-to-face working; but also do work online sessions when that is more feasible.

I offer humanistic, psychodynamic based integrative therapy; informed by Gestalt practice and the relational approach, and embracing aspects of cognitive therapy working both in the short term, identifying specific problems or the longer term, which offers the chance, with support to make real changes.

Paul Deaton

What does this mean practically? Principally, it means creating a safe setting where someone can begin to explore their own experiences and begin to work out what they feel and what they trust. Daily life is often a compromise that doesn’t give the space to explore our deepest feelings and therefore change for the better is more often than not, painfully, on hold.

Areas include depression, anxiety, illness, illness recovery, low self-esteem, relationship patterns, parental issues, addictions, bereavement and questions of meaning & purpose.

Practice description

Therapeutic Counselling

Sometimes we need help in our journeys to find out who we really are; we need a different perspective from friends and family, someone who is impartial, someone who can let us breath, who won’t react to what we say, won’t talk over us, and offer what ‘they think’ responses. Someone who can offer us a ‘confidential space’ that we can use with confidence; in busy daily lives this often feels lacking.

Counselling and therapy can offer this space to re-evaluate what is happening, what one wants, who one is and is a chance to talk about things that perhaps no else has properly listened to. Talking to someone in this way can make a real difference when we may have become stuck, directionless, depressed or caught in negative relationships or situations that seem beyond our control. It can help us understand where we are and what we really feel, but more importantly can help us work out where we need to go. Someone impartial can offer this exploration, change and permission.

I completed training at the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling, a course accredited by both BACP & UKCP qualifying in humanistic and integrative counselling (DipHIC, distinction, BCPC). This follows a life-long interest in people, their motivations and their relationships. I have a first class degree in psychology (Bath 2001), an MLiTT in creative writing (Glasgow, 2011) and two decades of experience in mental health, both the charity sector e.g. Mind, & Changes, Bristol but also in the NHS, working on acute mental health wards, and for the last four years counselling in addictions in Bristol. On top of counselling I facilitate groups, and also run creative writing workshops.

My first session

The First Step

The first session would be introductory (either online, face to face, or by phone); of 50 mins where you will be able to share what has been going on for you and maybe offer some goals you wish to achieve from the therapy. I will happily discuss the therapeutic process and try to answer any questions. This is a stand-alone meeting, where you can pause, reflect, and make the decision if you wish to start in therapy. If you decide you would wish to proceed then we would set up an on-going weekly appointment.

I have held a variety of roles across the NHS, the voluntary sector, local authorities and schools focussing particularly on relationships, mental health and wellbeing.

I have lived in Bristol for over 30 years and now work solely in private practice here, offering face-to-face and online appointments during daytime office hours from Monday to Thursday each week.

I am an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) and adhere to their code of ethics; my membership number is NCS21-01464.

About Relationship and Couple Counselling

There are many and varied reasons which lead people to seek relationship counselling and I have worked with individuals and couples on a broad range of issues including; communication, bereavement, fertility, trust, intimacy, family issues – including parenting, step-families and extended families – infidelity, work and financial worries along with separation and divorce.

Are you struggling to discuss important issues with your partner without arguing, or do you disagree on how to parent your children? Are you finding it difficult to be intimate together or is work stress impacting upon your family life? Have you recently separated from your partner and would like to explore what went wrong or do you have difficulty in developing and sustaining intimate relationships?

I aim to provide a safe, supportive, non-judgemental and confidential environment in which we can work collaboratively together, using a range of approaches in order to meet your unique and individual needs. I welcome clients from a broad and diverse range of backgrounds, including from the LGBTQ+ community.

Next Steps

Taking the first step in seeking support can feel daunting and I will do everything I can to help you to feel at ease.

If we decide to proceed to ongoing counselling, appointments are usually then weekly and at the same time to begin with. However, we can discuss and review our work together, including the frequency of appointments, at regular intervals. Whilst the duration of counselling varies, six to eight sessions can be a helpful minimum.

Availability and Fees

Appointments are mainly offered during office hours from Monday to Thursday each week. However, I do offer a very limited number of couple appointments on Wednesday evenings after 6pm. Please note that I am unable to offer appointments on Fridays, at weekends or on any other weekday evenings.

Integrative Counsellor: Mark Childs

Mark Childs pic

Life rarely follows the straightforward path we had hoped it would, and we can find ourselves in places we don’t recognise or discover that the path ahead delivers unexpected changes or challenges. These changes can often result in mixed feelings, some welcome and some hard to accept. Counselling can offer a space to come to terms with these changes and cope with the transitional stage we find ourselves in.

Mark Childs pic

I am able to work through your existential or spiritual concerns, help you to understand previous events and difficulties from your life, or work towards a future goal. In order to do this, I draw from a variety of approaches and creative techniques to work as an integrative counsellor and this helps me to best meet the specific needs of the person I am working with. However, I believe that the therapeutic journey is a collaborative one. Therefore, in order to honour the uniqueness and autonomy of the client, I would aim to approach any difficulties and obstacles in a mutual, collaborative and interpersonal way. Using this approach allows me to respond to the person I am sitting with rather than applying a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to suit everyone. Nonetheless, although I believe that creating a relationship this way between counsellor and client is central to creating a safe, trusting and supportive space for personal exploration, please rest assured that you will always be placed at the centre of the work.

The therapeutic work can be open-ended or run through a fixed number of sessions, depending on your preference. Initially, the first session will be about exploring what has brought you to counselling and your current situation. Following this, sessions act as a way for me to get to know you and your story more deeply, creating the base from which the therapeutic journey progresses. Should this strike a chord with you, I would be happy to meet with you to review your individual needs about what you would like to gain from coming to therapy.

Fees

Sessions last for 50 minutes and cost £70.

Clinical psychologist and chartered psychologist: Dr Joanne Weston

Joanne Weston

Please note that I am currently working by telephone or on-line.

Dr. Joanne Weston is a clinical psychologist and chartered psychologist. She is registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and holds chartered status and Associate Fellowship with the British Psychological Society (BPS). She offers psychological therapy, clinical supervision and also provides medico-legal reports for solicitors working on Personal Injury cases.

Clinical psychologist and chartered psychologist: Dr Joanne WestonI offer evidence-based assessment and psychological therapy to adults with a wide range of issues. I am trained in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic, systemic and person-centred approaches. I have also done additional training in areas such as eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), solution-focused therapy and narrative therapy.

Having this range of models to draw on, as well as a wealth of psychological knowledge, enables me to adapt my interventions to meet people’s varying needs. I would describe myself as an integrative practitioner.

I offer therapeutic work for emotional and mental health difficulties experienced during adulthood and into older age. These can include:

  • Anxiety and panic
  • Stress (including work-related stress)
  • Depression and low mood
  • Low self-confidence and low self-esteem
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Adjustment issues (e.g. due to illness, life changes, relationship break-ups)
  • Loss, grief and bereavement
  • Obsessions and compulsions (OCD)

Working with people who are experiencing problems that many of us face during our lives, whether that is anxiety, low mood, bereavement, specific phobias (such as flying) or generally struggling to cope with life’s demands and questions such as “Who am I? Who do I want to be?” is something that I find fulfilling. To help someone to understand and find ways to take control of their past, present and future is a rewarding aspect of my work.

Work philosophy:

I believe that every person is unique and needs an individual therapy plan which is tailored to fit with their specific situation – there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to therapy. An essential first step of any therapy is for the client and therapist to work together to get a good understanding of the problem and then explore how the person can reach their goals using therapeutic approaches that resonate with their values, beliefs and ways of thinking. I see my job as helping to empower and provide people with the support, tools and framework that they need to address their difficulties. I offer short-term and longer-term therapy.

Therapy offers many opportunities for personal growth but it also requires hard work and the courage to talk about things that you might never have told anyone before. I believe that all therapy needs to take place within a respectful, trusting, safe, confidential and containing therapeutic relationship. It is only when we feel unconditionally supported that we can allow ourselves to take risks and move forward with our lives.

Other services:

I also offer clinical supervision and provide medico-legal reports for solicitors working on Personal Injury cases (I have undertaken Bond Solon Expert Witness training).

Contact me:

If you would like to discuss any of my services or whether therapy could be suitable for you, please get in touch. I offer a free mini-consultation of up to 15 minutes over the telephone.
