I am also Psychodynamically and Social Work trained although my career has led me into the systemic field working with those who want to improve or better understand the relationships that they are in, or have been in. I have significant experience in working with adolescents on the edge of care, paediatric oncology, Adult Mental health services, adolescent in-patient services and currently I work part time in the NHS leading a small team of therapists who support adults and their families with difficulties in their relationships. I also come from a family that has experienced significant struggles connected to mental health so I have some understanding of how it can affect individuals/families from a personal perspective.

My work starts from the premise that we are almost all doing the best with what we have got – sometimes we just need some support to ‘get us back on track’ or find the life that we want to lead. The therapy I undertake is not about apportioning blame or picking sides. My aim is to build upon strengths and to find meaning in what is going on in our systems, as well as to attempt to find change where desired.

Colleagues and I are currently in the process of building the ‘Bristol Family Therapy Collective’, a Community Interest Company that aims to provide future access to fee paying and pro bono, or accessible, support.

I am a senior trainee Core Process Psychotherapist and offer a unique blend of Western psychotherapy and mindfulness-based practice. Integrating mindfulness with a reflective exploration of your experience can help you move from stuck reactive patterns shaped by your past to informed choices centred in the present moment.

Central to the exploration is a safe and trustworthy relationship with theRussel Cowan 2 therapist. Clear boundaries and mutual respect encourage an environment where you will feel seen, heard, and supported. The journey unfolds at your own pace and respects where you are starting from.

My Approach

As your therapist, my role is to hold a space that will enable us to explore and work through the places where you feel stuck. I am not the “expert” who is there to cure you – my aim is to support you to build trust in your own inherent wisdom. The space we create can enable you to approach your experience with curiosity – avoiding a sense of right or wrong – and to bring presence, awareness and compassion to the process.

I recognise that I come with a particular bias formed by my own ancestry, sexuality, sexual orientation, and the social and cultural structures I arose out of and live within. I try to work with an awareness of this and to remain teachable. To the best of my ability, I believe I can acknowledge difference and work inclusively with people whose background is different to my own.

What happens during a typical session

Each session will last one hour and have a similar structure. We will create a safe space to slow down and bring presence and awareness to whatever arises. We will interpret and respond to what arises with compassion and understanding. I usually work from chairs, which we position at a distance that feels comfortable to you.

Making an appointment

Entering psychotherapy can feel daunting, and choosing the right therapist is important. To help us decide if we want to work together, I offer a free initial phone call and a 30-minute introductory meeting. I am happy to work on either a short-term or a longer-term basis, but I suggest a minimum of 6-weeks’ initial commitment. At the end of this initial period, if you feel that our work isn’t what you are looking for, I will signpost you to alternative options.

My trainee rate is £45 per hour.

About me

Welcome, my name is Paulette and I’m a BACP registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

I suspect that you’ve had to look through several profiles before you reachedPaulette's picture August 2024 mine, so thank you for persevering.  My work with you will be a partnership in that you will have a voice in the direction of your therapy and that this is done by working within the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework.  I have a friendly, warm and thoughtful style of working and as a woman of colour, I can consider cultures other than my own.  I also work in a way that looks at how the different identities you might hold can shape the way in which life events can impact you.

Therapeutic Approach

My approach focuses on an integrative style of counselling and therapy.  Integrative therapy can meet the needs of the individual through a holistic approach to therapy.  This involves combining ideas and techniques from different therapeutic schools such as person centred, psychodynamic and gestalt therapy.  However, this is all dependent on what your needs maybe.  How this works in practice is that it enables me to offer a more flexible and inclusive approach.  The holistic approach aspires to consider your mental, physical, and emotional health needs in a unified way.  This is done by working together to understand the sources of your anxiety, unhappiness, physical discomfort, or unhealthy behaviour patterns.

Arranging a Meeting and Fee

Once you’ve had your free 20-minute video call, we can arrange to have your initial assessment which will last for 50 minutes at a cost of £60.  Thereafter your sessions will continue to be £60 for 50 minutes payable in advance of your session.  Specialist counselling will be subject to a cost of £70 upwards.  The sessions will be held in a therapy room in central Bristol.  My email address is paulette.mindfulbeing@gmail.com

How I work
The world is extremely complex, and there are many pressures all around us; pressure to be or think a particular way, to please others, to ‘fit in’. Often we do this at the expense of who we ‘really’ are, and this often leads to symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. Counselling provides a safe and confidential space to work through these things and move to living a more genuine and fulfilling life.

I work with a focus on the current needs and desires of the individual and believe that within everybody lies a unique spark that, if cultivated gently, with kindness, non judgementalism and understanding, can grow in exciting and often surprising ways.

The problem is that most of us come from the starting place of what we can’t do or be, so we never get the chance to express our higher selves. I believe that by providing a space to explore those things that feel difficult in a confidential, caring and accepting environment, it is possible to clear away the blocks that stop us from fulfilling our highest potential.

My experience consistently proves to me the power of having a space to just be yourself and I am often struck and impressed by the changes I have seen in people as the result of this process.

I tend to meet people weekly or fortnightly and work short or long term, depending on what feels appropriate. Individual sessions last for 50 minutes and Couple Counselling sessions last for 90 minutes.

The contents of each session will be unique to your needs. Sometimes we will just talk; you will have a chance to explore your ‘story’ and I will attempt to reflect this back to you to help you gain greater clarity. There may also be times when I suggest other activities to shine a light on a particular issue or problem – such as giving you a writing exercise to do, some artwork or some mindfulness meditation. However it pans out, the focus will be on your individual needs. I believe in the autonomy of the individual and my role is simply to facilitate a process where you can express yourself more freely and understand the circumstances of your life more clearly.

I have a special interest in working with neurodiversity, particularly adult awareness / late diagnosis of ADHD, its emotional impact and effect on past and present behaviour and relationships.

What you can expect from working with me:

We will work collaboratively and I’ll be an engaged, active participant in helping you work towards your therapeutic goals: I won’t just sit there nodding or reflecting back what you say to me. I am with you but will also challenge you and encourage you to take reasonable risks, when appropriate.

I don’t have all the answers and I’m not the expert on you – I firmly believe that you are. But going it alone is tough and by working together, we stand a much better chance at finding the right words for you to understand yourself, your experiences and your relationships.

The relationship between client and therapist is unique, one that isn’t experienced anywhere else, and one where you are at its centre. I am separate from your social circles and family, and won’t judge, give my opinion or advise you on what to do. Together we can create a space that is focused on you and what you need. Given how crucial the relationship is between client and therapist, it is important you feel we are a good fit.

Taking the first step towards counselling can feel hard, and it’s important to check we’re a good fit. I offer a free 25-minute phone/video call so we can have an initial chat, you can decide if you want to book a first appointment from there. If we go ahead, we will check in regularly to see how things are going between us, and if you’re getting what you need from our work together.

Sessions are charged at £60 per 50 minutes or £65 for 60 minutes.

I work face to face from the Harbourside Practice Rooms on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings (09.00-13.00).

I work online on Thursdays and Fridays with some availability on Wed evenings.

Training, qualifications & experience

As a chartered counselling psychologist, I specialise in supporting people of all ages toward better mental health. I did my doctoral training at City, University of London, and also hold degrees from the Universities of Oxford and Bristol. I am BPS accredited and HCPC registered (PYL37674) and abide by their ethical guidelines.

I currently teach psychology at doctoral level  and have trained corporations, institutions and government bodies on applying psychological theory within their workplaces. This requires me to continuously engage with latest psychology research which in turn informs my clinical practice.

I have expertise working with both symptom reduction as well as helping clients to understand why they might be feeling as they are. I recognise the importance for clients to be able to function day to day and can support them to make changes towards this goal. Many of my clients have lived with difficulties for years and find it helpful to have a safe, confidential space in which to talk with a professional, often for the first time.

Gaining greater understanding of why we feel and act how we do can give more choice as to how we wish to live our lives. To this end, my practice is informed by a wide range of approaches which I draw on flexibly to meet each client’s need and preference. I consult regularly with an expert clinical supervisor and seek specialist training to ensure I am offering best practice.
