Therapeutic Counsellor: Paul Deaton

Paul Deaton

About me and my therapy practice

I have returned to face-to-face working; but also do work online sessions when that is more feasible.

I offer humanistic, psychodynamic based integrative therapy; informed by Gestalt practice and the relational approach, and embracing aspects of cognitive therapy working both in the short term, identifying specific problems or the longer term, which offers the chance, with support to make real changes.

Paul Deaton

What does this mean practically? Principally, it means creating a safe setting where someone can begin to explore their own experiences and begin to work out what they feel and what they trust. Daily life is often a compromise that doesn’t give the space to explore our deepest feelings and therefore change for the better is more often than not, painfully, on hold.

Areas include depression, anxiety, illness, illness recovery, low self-esteem, relationship patterns, parental issues, addictions, bereavement and questions of meaning & purpose.

Practice description

Therapeutic Counselling

Sometimes we need help in our journeys to find out who we really are; we need a different perspective from friends and family, someone who is impartial, someone who can let us breath, who won’t react to what we say, won’t talk over us, and offer what ‘they think’ responses. Someone who can offer us a ‘confidential space’ that we can use with confidence; in busy daily lives this often feels lacking.

Counselling and therapy can offer this space to re-evaluate what is happening, what one wants, who one is and is a chance to talk about things that perhaps no else has properly listened to. Talking to someone in this way can make a real difference when we may have become stuck, directionless, depressed or caught in negative relationships or situations that seem beyond our control. It can help us understand where we are and what we really feel, but more importantly can help us work out where we need to go. Someone impartial can offer this exploration, change and permission.

I completed training at the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling, a course accredited by both BACP & UKCP qualifying in humanistic and integrative counselling (DipHIC, distinction, BCPC). This follows a life-long interest in people, their motivations and their relationships. I have a first class degree in psychology (Bath 2001), an MLiTT in creative writing (Glasgow, 2011) and two decades of experience in mental health, both the charity sector e.g. Mind, & Changes, Bristol but also in the NHS, working on acute mental health wards, and for the last four years counselling in addictions in Bristol. On top of counselling I facilitate groups, and also run creative writing workshops.

My first session

The First Step

The first session would be introductory (either online, face to face, or by phone); of 50 mins where you will be able to share what has been going on for you and maybe offer some goals you wish to achieve from the therapy. I will happily discuss the therapeutic process and try to answer any questions. This is a stand-alone meeting, where you can pause, reflect, and make the decision if you wish to start in therapy. If you decide you would wish to proceed then we would set up an on-going weekly appointment.

Drama and Internal Family Systems Psychotherapist: Rose Sadowski

At some point in life we all need some extra support. A non-judgemental space to feel seen and heard in our experience. Someone to walk alongside us on our journey who is separate from our everyday lives, offering professional guidance & reflection.

As a therapist, I aim to offer this in a way that feels congruent and helpful for you. I offer a space for you to process and understand your experience safely. When the world around us can often feel confusing and turbulent, the combination of psychotherapy and creativity can offer containment, insight and the potential for positive change.

Sometimes words are not enough. Drama Psychotherapy offers a chance to explore and express what words cannot, using all modes of creativity, and psychodynamic processes.

Internal Family Systems explores our inner world, and compassionately welcomes all parts of our experience.

It is a form of psychotherapy that supports exploration of our internal worlds, and focuses on a client’s internal “parts” and “Self.” The IFS model considers that we are all naturally made up of many ‘parts’ or sub-personalities, which have developed for us over time to serve us in different ways. These sub-personalities take on different roles, such as an inner critic or inner child, and consist of wounded parts and painful feelings. It is a deeply compassionate model of therapy, with the philosophy that there are no bad parts: All parts are welcome. In IFS my aim is to help clients access and strengthen their sense of Self, so that they can heal wounded parts and bring their emotional systems into balance and harmony.

I am also trained in MANTRA, a NICE guideline treatment for Anorexia Nervosa in adults.

I have extensive experience working with eating disorders, trauma, mental illness & life challenges.

It can feel daunting making initial contact with a potential therapist. But it is a vital first step to receiving help. I am warm & empathic, so please do not hesitate to get in touch when you feel ready. I also offer a free consultation session, for us to meet and for you to consider if I am the right therapist for you.

Relationship Counsellor: Hannah Russell MNCPS (Acc.)

Hannah Russell pic 21 September 2023 IMG_2673

About Me

I’m a Relate-trained adult relationship counsellor with many years experience of working therapeutically with both individuals and couples.Hannah Russell pic 21 September 2023 IMG_2673

Throughout my career I have been passionate about working to improve outcomes for individuals, families and children. I have held a variety of roles across the NHS, the voluntary sector, local authorities and schools focussing particularly on relationships, mental health and wellbeing.

My interest in counselling began when studying psychology as an undergraduate and led me to train with the Bristol-based charity Womankind, working on their helpline, and then later, from 2008, with Relate as a specialist adult relationship counsellor.

I have lived in Bristol for over 30 years and now work solely in private practice here, offering appointments during daytime office hours from Monday to Thursday each week. I am an accredited member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) and adhere to their code of ethics.

About Relationship Counselling

There are many and varied reasons which lead people to seek relationship counselling and I have worked with individuals and couples on a broad range of issues including; communication, bereavement, fertility, trust, intimacy, family issues – including parenting, step-families and extended families – infidelity, work and financial worries along with separation and divorce.

Are you struggling to discuss important issues with your partner without arguing, or do you disagree on how to parent your children? Are you finding it difficult to be intimate together or is work stress impacting upon your family life? Have you recently separated from your partner and would like to explore what went wrong or do you have difficulty in developing and sustaining intimate relationships?

I aim to provide a safe, supportive, non-judgemental and confidential environment in which we can work collaboratively on the issues that are important to you, focussing on meeting your unique, individual needs. I work face to face and online and I welcome clients from a broad and diverse range of backgrounds, including from the LGBTQ+ community.

Next Steps, Booking and Fees

Taking the first step in seeking support can feel daunting and I will do everything I can to help you to feel at ease.

I can offer a brief, free telephone conversation to help answer any questions you may have before deciding whether to book in for an initial consultation. Alternatively, you would be welcome to get in touch to arrange your initial consultation.

Ongoing counselling appointments are usually scheduled weekly. The duration of counselling varies, however six to eight sessions can be a helpful minimum. In shorter term counselling we may focus on the more immediate issues you are experiencing in your day-to-day life, whereas longer term work may allow for a deeper perspective on how your past experiences may be affecting your current difficulties.

All appointments are 50 minutes in length and charged at £65 for individual counselling and £85 for couple counselling.

Integrative Counsellor: Mark Childs

Mark Childs pic

Life rarely follows the straightforward path we had hoped it would, and we can find ourselves in places we don’t recognise or discover that the path ahead delivers unexpected changes or challenges. These changes can often result in mixed feelings, some welcome and some hard to accept. Counselling can offer a space to come to terms with these changes and cope with the transitional stage we find ourselves in.

Mark Childs pic

I am able to work through your existential or spiritual concerns, help you to understand previous events and difficulties from your life, or work towards a future goal. In order to do this, I draw from a variety of approaches and creative techniques to work as an integrative counsellor and this helps me to best meet the specific needs of the person I am working with. However, I believe that the therapeutic journey is a collaborative one. Therefore, in order to honour the uniqueness and autonomy of the client, I would aim to approach any difficulties and obstacles in a mutual, collaborative and interpersonal way. Using this approach allows me to respond to the person I am sitting with rather than applying a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to suit everyone. Nonetheless, although I believe that creating a relationship this way between counsellor and client is central to creating a safe, trusting and supportive space for personal exploration, please rest assured that you will always be placed at the centre of the work.

The therapeutic work can be open-ended or run through a fixed number of sessions, depending on your preference. Initially, the first session will be about exploring what has brought you to counselling and your current situation. Following this, sessions act as a way for me to get to know you and your story more deeply, creating the base from which the therapeutic journey progresses. Should this strike a chord with you, I would be happy to meet with you to review your individual needs about what you would like to gain from coming to therapy.

Fees

Sessions last for 50 minutes and cost £60.

Psychotherapist – CBT, EMDR, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Prolonged Grief Therapy – Hannah Lehrain

Hannah Lehrain 6/3/25

Common Sense and Compassion

I’m Hannah, a psychotherapist passionate about supporting people through life’s challenges. Based in Bristol, I specialise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), trauma therapy, and perinatal mental health, helping clients navigate anxiety, depression, and major life transitions.Hannah Lehrain 6/3/25

I approach therapy with a “let’s figure this out together” mindset, treating clients with respect, openness, and understanding. My goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with confidence.

From my earliest training in CBT, I felt drawn to helping people manage complex emotions. This led me to specialise in trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), supporting individuals through experiences such as sexual assault, accidents, migration, and significant life changes.

After moving to Bristol, I expanded my expertise to include perinatal mental health, working with mothers and parents through the profound changes that come with pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. I provide support for issues such as birth trauma, baby loss, and the emotional shifts that can arise during this transformative time.

My approach integrates trauma-informed care with practical strategies to build resilience, emotional wellbeing, and self-compassion. I am fully accredited with both the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy UK (IPTUK), and I also offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy (PGDT).

Problems I Work With

I have experience helping clients with a wide range of difficulties, including:

  • Anxiety (generalised anxiety, panic attacks, health anxiety, social anxiety)
  • Depression (low mood, lack of motivation, feelings of hopelessness)
  • Trauma and PTSD (including birth trauma, accidents, assault, and migration-related trauma)
  • Perinatal Mental Health (pregnancy-related anxiety, postnatal depression, birth trauma, baby loss)
  • Grief and Loss (bereavement, miscarriage, stillbirth, or other significant losses)
  • Life Transitions (adjusting to parenthood, career changes, retirement, or other major shifts)
  • Low Self-Esteem and Confidence
  • Stress and Worry (work-related stress, overwhelm, or chronic worry)
  • Sleep Difficulties (insomnia, disrupted sleep patterns)
  • Relationship Challenges (conflicts, communication issues, or adjusting to new dynamics)

My Approach
I believe in tailoring therapy to your unique needs, using evidence-based techniques to help you build resilience, develop coping strategies, and move toward a more fulfilling life. Whether you’re navigating a specific challenge or seeking support for ongoing difficulties, I’m here to help you find clarity, strength, and hope.

The Harbour room refreshed!

We’ve recently finished updating the Harbour room. The sink and the tired tub chairs have gone and new chairs, pictures, and paint have given the room a clean and contemporary look but retained its confidential and comfortable character.

Example of Emy Lou Holmes work

The new pictures – all of Bristol or its surrounds – are by local artist Emy Lou Holmes.

Emily lives and works in Bristol. She creates illustrations of local towns and cities and retro-inspired images. The pictures reflect her interest in 60s & 70s aesthetics and she collects vintage fabrics and wallpapers to collage into her work.

We like the ‘local-ness’ of the pictures and the fact that they are somehow contemporary despite the retro inspiration.

New rooms above the old

The new rooms in our sister practice in the top half of the house are now complete and, just like  the rooms downstairs, are already providing a credible, professional and attractive place for our practitioners and their clients to engage.

There are three new talking rooms and another room set aside for therapists to use as a common room.

The new skylight, specially commissioned to provide a colourful and varied light, sheds a warm glow over the top landing.

Soundproofing has been a big investment but is working well; even the new fire doors have a special sound proofing bar that descends below the door and into the threshold as the door shuts. Silent sweep clocks and a double door finish off our attempts to make the rooms as conducive as we can…

Our newest neighbours

Julie Gresty used her photography skills to capture this charming picture of a male blue tit feeding a female in the garden as she (hopefully) incubates a clutch of eggs. Blue tits apparently lay a large number of eggs, possibly as many as eleven or twelve so we’re looking forward to seeing the young birds soon.

Our sister practice upstairs

From the roof to Millenium Square
From the roof of the new rooms looking towards Millenium Square

In August 2018 Bristol’s planning department gave permission to use the top two floors in our building for counselling and psycho-therapeutic work. No. 3 Redcliffe Parade East is physically divided into two self-contained units and we have the downstairs two floors. The two upstairs floors will be a separate suite of 3 new counselling rooms and a waiting room and will bring a much needed resource to Redcliffe, the city centre, and southern Bristol.

The planning process has delayed commissioning the new rooms which has had a knock-on effect, but they should be operational in the New Year, providing counselling rooms and a space for small groups (CPD  etc).  We look forward to it.
