Integrative counsellor and psychotherapist: Dr Nilu Ahmed

Hello, my name is Nilufar or Nilu (pr. Nee-loo) for short.

With over 20 years of experience working in mental health, I bring skills from a very evidence-based academic training as a psychologist, as well a real grounded approach from my work in the community engaging with people from all walks of life.Nilu Ahmed received August 2020

As well as my counselling and psychotherapy qualifications, I am an academic with a background and training in Psychology and Geography. It might seem like an odd mix, but essentially I am fascinated by the dynamic relationship between people and place – how does where we live (the place, the space, the people) make us who we are; and how do we, as individuals and communities (with our individual traits, our cultural frameworks, beliefs) transform spaces? I bring all this to my therapy work which is characterised by a passionate curiosity about people.

My approach is Integrative which means that there is not one particular discipline I follow at the exclusion of others, but rather it allows me to use my expertise and knowledge to be able to find the right way of working with you. What remains constant, regardless of style of counselling, is my absolute commitment to helping us create a space where you can feel comfortable and safe.

I work across many areas but have specific expertise in working with racial, cultural, and religious diversities and the complex ways in which that frames experiences and interactions. As a child of immigrants and the only person of colour on my training course, the sense of being out of place and experiences of racism are very familiar to me.
