What is Bowen Therapy?

Louise Davies Oct 2015

Bowen Therapy, or The Bowen Technique, is a gentle but powerful, hands-on therapy that can provide pain relief and promote healing for a wide range of conditions.

How does Bowen work?
There is, as yet, no clear consensus as to how Bowen Therapy works, however research is ongoing to try to find out. It is thought that through a series of rolling-type moves over the body’s soft tissue – muscle, fascia, tendons, ligaments – the brain is prompted to make the changes needed to adjust tension within the body, returning it to a state of balance, and alleviating pain.
Treatments are generally deeply relaxing and can be used on anyone, including pregnant women, newborn infants and the elderly. Most treatments last about 45 minutes and in many cases, relief from chronic and acute pain can be achieved in three to five visits, sometimes sooner. Much depends on the type of problem, the length of time it has been present, the age and general health of the client.

What can Bowen treat?
Bowen Therapy does not treat specific medical conditions, but, instead, aims to treat the whole person. This helps to ensure that underlying issues not immediately or obviously connected to the presenting problem, are not overlooked. For this reason, any problem can, potentially, be addressed.
Many people, especially sports people, those with chronic or recurring conditions and/or those with physically-demanding or stressful jobs, now use Bowen Therapy as a means of general health maintenance and stress management, with ‘maintenance’ treatments at regular intervals throughout the year.

The following conditions are among those which have responded well to Bowen Therapy:

  • Back pain and neck pain
  • Leg, knee, ankle and foot problems
  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand problems
  • Headaches including migraines
  • Cranial & spinal injuries including whiplash
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Accident and sporting injuries
  • Digestive and intestinal conditions
  • Asthma and respiratory problems
  • Menstrual, fertility and menopausal conditions
  • Pre and post-natal problems
  • Acute and chronic fatigue
  • Stress-related problems and emotional depression
